January 29 - Feb 6, 2010: Ferndale Blues Festival - 9th Annual in Ferndale (just north of Detroit).

Fest features "Live Blues" at many venues. On Friday and Saturday nights, there will be a shuttle bus running between all the venues. Festival donates proceeds to charity.

January 29-30, 2010: 33rd Ann Arbor Folk Festival at Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor.

FEBRUARY

February 3-7, 2010: 13th Annual Sphinx Competition and Finals Concert in Ann Arbor and Detroit.

Competition is open to all Junior High, High School, and College age Black and Latino string players residing in the U.S. The Finals Concert is hosted by the Detroit Symphony at the Max M. Fisher Music Center in Detroit.

March 13, 2009 (Friday): The Hex Bombs CD Release Party in Kalamazoo (West-MI).
Kalamazoo natives The Hex Bombs, a band best described as "American street punk performed for the working class, by the working class." The release party takes place at Papa Pete's music venue at 502 S. Burdick St. in downtown Kalamazoo; doors open at 8pm. Admission is $5 at the door for those ages 21+ and $7 for ages 18-20. March 20-30, 2009: Assembly Line Concert - An Attempt To Set A New World Record For Live Music

 Assembly Line Concert (a tribute to The American Worker)
10 days, 240 Hours, 24/7 non-stop live music. Each of the 10 days will highlight different aspects of the American partnership between workers, employers, politicians and the media. One day, political leaders will play 24, one-hour sets; another day, auto workers; and another day, local Detroit bands. Even members of the media will have their own day to play and be a part of the big news event. Musicians from all segments of society come together in the heart of hard-hit Main Street America and help pay tribute to the American worker.

Sponsored by West Michigan Bluegrass Music Association, it features a national act and some local and regional bluegrass groups, plus 4 workshops. "There will be plenty of picking and grinning throughout the festival grounds all weekend. Our festival is known for some great parking lot picking and the pickin' can go on in fair weather or foul."

May 16, 2009 (sat): Valley Blues Festival in Flint to benefit the Valley School scholarship fund for its students to attend school there. Fest will be held at the Flint Cultural Center, behind Sloan Museum, 1221 E. Kearsley. Gate opens at 2pm. Ticket Prices: $20 in advance, $25 at the gate, $50 VIP tickets. This event may no longer exist, contact the Detroit News for update. It was an annual competition for 13 to 18 year olds who are in Metro Detroit bands of all genres, 10 to 12 bands in the finals, $10,000 worth of prizes.

Boston's Muck and the Mires, voted number one Garage Rock band in the US by Little Steven Van Zandt, make their Detroit area debut. Details: cash bar, dress comfortable, ages 21 and up. Madman Mike will be unleashed as the DJ music entertainment this night. Music will be popular dance from the oldies to the Cupid Shuffle, plus some rock, country, and disco tossed in. Ends when the crowd thins or 3:30am, whichever comes first.
